Some notes about Intuitive Readings
My friend says I make people cry. Not everyone cries! ;) I don’t do it on purpose but when I read for someone there is a tendency to bring up whatever needs to be addressed even if it’s not conscious. I’ve noticed it comes up because the client and I create a safe place so we can remove the inner roadblocks that may be impeding progress. As she put it, sometimes you come in with questions and after the reading you realize they weren’t the right ones but you got the answers you needed.
By the way, intuitive reading is not as glamorous as it sounds. It’s definitely a privilege to help others but it comes with a lot of responsibility. Confidentiality, comfort, empathy, safety and more.
Second, any ethical reader, healer, practitioner, etc. will tell you that reading for others is also part of our personal growth. Things sometimes get highlighted to show us our own issues. And boy if we ignore them, we’ll get client after client who’ll rehash the same issue. I’m lucky, one instructor told us… know your buttons cause every once in a while you’ll get a reading that’ll push those buttons and you have to be ready to deal with it. So you really have to know yourself to a certain degree to read for others with some personal code of ethics.
One example of how your own stuff can come up was evident to me over a year ago, every reading would come up with mother issues. Time after time. I thought it strange cause though I knew this to be true (obvious pattern) I didn’t know why this was happening. I didn’t have mother issues. Yeah, right. So they too were highlighted in my life so I could address them.
I’ve also realized my limitations. I used to think I could help everybody, like Oriah Mountain Dreamer said in her book The Invitation: “how naïve and how egotistical of me.” It’s simply not the case. Sometimes people are looking for something else. I’m simple. I have no goodies in a bag. Well, I do like to use Angel Cards because they’re gorgeous and give me something to delve into deeper than looking beyond the side of the client’s face. But other than that I don’t bring feathers, crystals or other things. I don’t perform major rituals before or after. I believe we are Spirit and it is in this connection with each other and Spirit/Universe/Love that we can get any information and open any doors we want. Sometimes I realize people don’t want to heal, they just want to be comforted, and that’s OK too. Others may just want attention, not being ready to receive, and in spending our energy together neither of us is benefiting, so we move on and open space for better suiting relationships.
Don’t think I haven’t encountered skeptics, even after my confidence has improved. I once had a woman ask me what I did that was so different to what she did at home with the same cards. I said I read them “intuitively” and showed her how. Still not satisfied, she asked for a reading. I started to shuffle the cards and I had her pick some and she said that’s it? No ritual before it? (like really I must be kidding myself or something ;) I wondered what this woman had seen, was I supposed to flap my wings invoke something and make smoke and mirrors happen?. Ah well, no show here not that there's anything wrong with that, it's just my belief system is simple. I work under the KISS principle (keep it simple stupid ;) and it works for me. I believe we're made of magical fabric that everything's made of. Despite my irreverence, she stuck around as the session went on her arms unraveled and at the end of the reading, in tears she said: you truly have a gift. The skeptic conversion, ahhh now that’s fun!
We all have this gift by the way. Laura Day calls it the "idiot's gift". I’m just telling my experience. I believe what Jesus said “anything I can do, you can do better”. I’m a skeptic too, believe it or not. Though through the years I’ve entertained many psychics, I always laughed or rolled my eyes when they said you’ll be doing what I do or you’re a medium. I thought what I saw is what everyone saw, very childlike mentality, I didn’t think it special at all. So, I thought they tell this to every other person who they read for and that’s not really a highly acclaimed desire at least in my book. I wanted to know about romance, financial jobs, health, fitness, fashion, anything but: you’re gonna be doing this. Yeah, yeah, whatever.
See? Skeptic Conversion is always amusing. Even if you’re the converted. I'm still a skeptic, I even tell clients, experience yourself and you can let me know. "keep an open mind but don't let your brains fall out." Being a skeptic believer only makes exploring more fun.
I once asked to be a clearer channel for healing. Little did I know it would require healing and clearing a lot of my own things that needed healing. A lot of things were brought to my attention for healing since that passing seemingly simple thought. I am grateful though for it has only made me even more empathetic.
From other practitioners, I learned many things from positive and negative experiences. I learned what I wanted to be like and what I didn't want. I'll share with you what I learned I want as a healer/reader: I want to comfort, to help the person remember their own light and power (be their own guru), to listen, be honest, compassionate yet objective, be of service, to be a clear channel for healing and Truth; and hopefully I'm doing this to the best of my ability.
Natural curiosity, analytical ability, empathy and a desire to help others is really what led me to be a reader. I love seeing that Aha! moment in someone’s eyes. I love finding what’s really the problem beneath the surface and hopefully finding the solution and suggesting ways to implement it. I love the mystery of it all. I never know what we’ll uncover in a reading. It’s like traveling, fun and healing. Not always easy but always rewarding.
